About this work

By the 1730s the Rococo style was reaching its height in France and a highly fanciful, imaginary interpretation of imagery from Asia had emerged, with François Boucher one of the leading exponents. The decoration on this wine cooler derives from a chalk drawing by Boucher and Gabriel Huquier, with Boucher likely undertaking the main decorative elements. It was then engraved, in reverse, by Pierre Aveline, and then employed by the Vincennes manufactory as decoration for the wine cooler.
