About this work
Arguably, the finest porcelains ever made in the Art Nouveau style are those produced by the Dutch Rozenburg factory in The Hague. Introduced in 1899 under the Art Director J. Juriaan Kok, the famous ‘eggshell’ porcelain is unmatched for its thinness, its flamboyant shapes and the minute delicacy of its painted decoration. The sweeping lines of this coffee pot are reminiscent of forms found in Meiji-period Japanese bronzes, while the graceful decoration employs a soft, refined palette to render sinuous plant tendrils and other nature-inspired motifs, including an elongated praying mantis, on the handle.
