About this work

Pierre Paulin’s Chair 598 exemplifies the quest of many twentieth-century designers for minimalism, style and comfort. One of Paulin’s key considerations in his design work was the sitter’s freedom of movement. It was important that a chair enabled the sitter to adopt a range of casual yet comfortable positions, and Chair 598 – with its tensioned metal frame covered in foam and wool upholstery – presents a relaxed yet sophisticated seating proposition. Paulin’s designs show his desire for clean-lined simplicity, also evident in his use of numbers for his chair titles.
