About this work
Mackmurdo was an architect and designer and founder of the Century Guild in 1882, one of the first late nineteenth-century arts and crafts organisations to be established. He was also a member of the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society, established a few years later. Members of the Century Guild produced designs for a range of media, including upholstered furniture, metalwork, textiles, wallpaper and enamels which were manufactured by outside firms. Much of their design work was inspired by the natural world and foreshadowed Art Nouveau design a decade later.
