About this work

This Vitrine was from Hermine Gallia’s boudoir in which she entertained her female friends during the day. All the furniture was painted white with gilded carved details and upholstered in red silk ottoman, as seen on the back of the vitrine. The walls were hung with ‘Wedgwood-blue’ silk, woven with a stylised rose spray in red and green and the floor carpet was similar with a grid of blue squares and the rose motif placed regularly. The room also contained Gustav Klimt’s full-length portrait of Hermine which he completed in 1904, eight years before the Gallia’s commissioned Josef Hoffmann to design their apartment. Hermine’s portrait now hangs in the National Gallery, London.
