About this work

The pair of library chairs were originally made for Abney Hall, Cheshire, England a house furnished during the 1850s. Their x-frame profile and detailing draw on chairs Pugin designed for the London Houses of Parliament. Like many designers, Pugin’s furniture was frequently conceived as part of an integrated interior for which he would design the carpet, ceiling and wall decoration.
