About this work

Marcel Breuer was one of the leading designers and architects associated with the Bauhaus school. As one of his earliest designs, this chair was conceived as a result of Walter Gropius, director of the Bauhaus at the time, encouraging Breuer to consider standardised elements for furniture that would be suitable for mass production. Breuer’s innovative approach to these ideas is reflected in the armchair’s design: it has a flexible seat and backrest – no heavy or expensive upholstery – and the seat is angled to support the upper leg. These elements enable a graduated positioning of the upper body, while the back is supported but left free from pressure.
