About this work
This gold-coated bust is of the admired clergyman Saint Filippo Neri (1515–95). It resembles a marble sculpture of him by Alessandro Algardi and a well-known portrait by Guido Reni. Both show Neri gazing upwards in ecstasy experiencing a vision of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child, which became a model for how other artists portrayed the saint. It is difficult to attribute this work to a particular artist. Such was the popularity of Neri and the international nature of Baroque art, it could have been made anywhere in Europe, most likely in Spain or Italy.
