About this work

The decoration on this dish copies ceramics made in Iznik, Turkey in around 1550–60. In the Cantagalli firm’s catalogues, some Iznik-type plates are variously described as ‘Persian or Rhodian’. A plate similar to this one is described as ‘piatto Damasco’, ‘Damascus plate’, reflecting the uncertainly at the time as to where various types of what are now referred to as ‘Iznik pottery’ were made.
