About this work

Plaquettes were also produced north of the Alps in the the German lands. Nuremberg and Augsburg emerged as centres of plaquette production in the early sixteenth century. These objects served similar functions to their Italian predecessors. As small, easily transportable objects avidly collected by scholars and artists, plaquettes facilitated the transmission of artistic ideas across Europe.
