About this work
This engraving of King Charles I is based on a painting by Anthony van Dyck. Van Dyck was particularly popular among the aristocracy due to his tendency to paint his sitters in a flattering light. In his portrait of Charles I, certain details communicate the king’s status: the baton he holds denotes his senior military rank while the gold chain around his neck signifies his membership of the prestigious Order of the Garter. In the same year this work was produced, van Dyck was appointed ‘principalle Paynter in ordinary to their Majesties’ at the Stuart court.
