About this work
Lyonel Feininger played a key role in shaping the Bauhaus school’s innovative approach to modern art and design. He began teaching at the newly established institution in 1919 after being invited by founder Walter Gropius in 1918. During his tenure, Feininger pioneered new printmaking techniques and combined functional design with a fine-art sensibility. Feininger remained at the Bauhaus for several years, mentoring students such as Ludwig Hirschfeld Mack and Hans Friedrich Grohs.
