About this work
J. J. Hilder’s landscape watercolours were highly prized for their subjective vision and sophisticated colour harmonies. His handling of broad washes on textured papers and atmospheric effects of light, haze and mist proved so influential on other watercolourists (amateurs in particular) that in the 1920s fellow artist George Lambert scathingly described such work as belonging to the ‘blotting-paper school’. Hilder’s work sold very well during his lifetime, and his popularity and influence were reinforced by a tribute exhibition held in 1916 and the publication of a major monograph in the same year.
