About this work
In Hyde Park was painted during Proctor’s first extended stay in London and is an early example of the artist’s use of watercolour, a medium she continued to work with throughout her life. When exhibited in 1911, the work was singled out and praised for its power and boldness. Proctor’s fluent, broad handling of the brush and colour reflect the influence of her cousin John Russell, whom she visited in France in 1910, as well as her knowledge of French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art.
