About this work

Fred Williams liked to use gouache for outdoor sketching and produced an inventive and substantial body of work in the medium. This gouache, and the related 1968 oil painting (also in the NGV Collection), belongs to Williams’s Upwey series. In these works, a new density of colour and formal structure are added to the distinctive calligraphy and compositional devices Williams had already developed. In this powerful painting, the scrubby, irregular nature of the Australian bush is vividly portrayed through the nuanced complexity of Williams’s mark-making.
