About this work
Following studies at the National Gallery School, Hugh Ramsay arrived in Paris at the end of January 1901 and shared a studio with fellow Australian James MacDonald, located in a dilapidated building at 51 Boulevard St Jacques in Montparnasse. Other artists residing there included Ambrose Patterson and the American artists Henry Ossawa Tanner and Frederick Freiseke. On 6 February 1901, Ramsay wrote to his sister Jessie, detailing his move: ‘You would have laughed to see Jim and me wheeling a hand-truck loaded with furniture along the boulevards. Also carrying a bed like an ambulance stretcher. But you can do anything in Paris.’
