About this work
The simplicity of many works of the Pont-Aven School reflected the artists’ interest in folklore, traditional imagery, and pre-industrial societies, and, relatedly, their nostalgia for ‘untouched’ cultures. This print was published in L’Ymagier, a journal that specialised in the history of early religious and popular woodcuts, together with songs, poetry, articles and contemporary Symbolist prints. Spring is a dream-like image of tonal and textural contrasts built up with pen, crayon and tusche (lithographic wash). Set on a recognisable coastline near Séguin’s house in Brittany, unlike her diligent companion, the reclining woman wearing a Breton coiffe is lost in reverie.
