About this work
Tony Tuckson was the deputy director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW) from 1957 until his death in 1973. Born in Egypt to English parents, he first experienced First Nations Australian art in 1949, and this ignited a lifelong passion. In the late 1950s, he acquired Pukumani burial-ceremony poles for AGNSW, and in 1960 became the first institutional curator to display Aboriginal and Melanesian art as contemporary art. Although Tuckson was a prolific artist, he kept his artistic practice private for most of his life. White lines (horizontal) on red was included in Tuckson’s second solo exhibition, held at Frank Watters Gallery, Sydney, in 1973.
