About this work
Often referred to as one of the ‘Little Masters’ due to the small scale of his engravings, Sebald Beham was one of the most prolific printmakers of his generation. Like much of Beham’s early work, this engraving of St Jerome shows the strong influence of fellow Nuremberg artist Albrecht Dürer. This resemblance ultimately led to significant trouble for the artist. In 1528 Beham’s book on the proportions of horses was censored on charges of plagiarising Dürer, and he was forced out of Nuremberg.
