About this work
Widely regarded as England’s most significant early printmaker, Wenceslaus Hollar led a well-travelled life during a period of great turbulence. Born in Prague, he spent almost a decade in Germany before arriving in London in 1636 as a protégé of the Earl of Arundel, the preeminent English art collector and patron. In 1644 Hollar completed Views of Some of the Most Pleasant Places Situated in Different Regions, a series of prints started in 1643, based on drawings from his time in England and his earlier travels through Germany. The series was later faithfully reproduced by French-born printmaker Abraham Aubri.
