About this work
This carved marble panel was intended as a section of decorative scheme for a private Renaissance home. Interestingly, the figures of Antony and Cleopatra are treated as significant sculptures in their own right, reflecting the growing culture of connoisseurship. It is one of eight reliefs of Classical heroes and heroines inspired by Antiquity attributed to Gianmaria Mosca, a leading sculptor of the late sixteenth century. Mosca was born in Padua but worked in nearby Venice, where he became renowned for his skill in carving thin, semi-transparent layers of marble. His reliefs were celebrated and copied across Europe.
