About this work

In the 1640s Bernini was the most celebrated sculptor working in Rome and Cardinal Richelieu (1585–1642), chief minister to Louis XIII, was the most powerful French statesman of his day. Bernini’s bust was sculpted without the artist having met his sitter. It is believed that Bernini worked from a triple-angled portrait of the cardinal (National Gallery, London), which was painted in Paris by Philippe de Champaigne and then sent to Rome as Bernini’s ‘model’.
