About this work

This work is thought to be Agostino Carracci’s final engraving. Published shortly after his death in an unfinished state, St Jerome was later completed and reissued by Francesco Brizio. In the work, St Jerome is depicted kneeling in profile while striking his chest with a rock in an act of penance. Carracci was strongly influenced by the classicising tendencies of High Renaissance Roman painting, as is evident in his treatment of the saint. The figure’s semi-clad, contorted form is clearly inspired by Michelangelo’s ignudi (nude men) on the Sistine Chapel ceiling, and, in turn, the idealised proportions of ancient sculpture.
