About this work
In the report on his purchasing expedition to England and France in 1905, Bernard Hall, Director of the Gallery, wrote to the Trustees on 27 July 1905: 'Arrived in London in February just in time to see the last of the International Exhibition held at the New Art Gallery where I selected La Femme couchee (Woman resting), a small but good example of Aman-Jean's work, one of the most refined of Modern Franch artists and one whose work I was looking out for'. The painting is undated and there is no indication of whether or not it was a recent work when it was shown in London at the beginning of 1905. The recumbent nude with a loose-sleeved blouse is the subject of paintings by the artist as early as 1895, but the lighter palette, the technique and the disposition of the figure all suggest a date closer to 1904.
