About this work
Charles Meryon’s etchings are meticulous in their attention to detail – a consequence of his training as a naval draughtsman, the innovations of photography, which he often relied upon, and his antiquarian interest in recording the passing appearance of the city. His etchings also have a highly personal character and convey a sense of mystery and tension. Meryon appreciated the different effects that could be achieved by varying ink and paper colour, as well as the wiping of the plate, to create impressions that are both brilliant and subtle.
