About this work
This view of the Grand Canal in Venice was once considered an anonymous product of Canaletto’s workshop. Research into the studio output of Canaletto – and the role of his nephew Bernardo Bellotto in it – has resulted in a new group of works being now confidently credited to Bellotto. Scholars now agree that Bellotto’s distinct early painting manner, characterised by his fluid white highlights in the clouds, W-shaped ripples on the surface of the water, his use of black paint in the shadows and his impastoed modelling of figures, is particularly evident in this painting.
