About this work
Corot painted this view of the Schiavoni dock during the second of three visits to Venice. This picturesque spot was a motif much-favoured by artists. An exotic reminder of Venice’s former power as a trading nation with the East, ‘schiavoni’(slaves) refers to the Arab slaves who disembarked and were exchanged there. For Corot, and indeed, Canaletto before him, the motif was more important for its unbroken transitions between land, sea and sky. Corot painted the Quay several times, in this example during the late afternoon. His Venetian plein-air studies are prized for their qualities of light and brilliant colour.
