About this work

Around 1600 Arent de Gelder entered the studio of Samuel van Hoogstraten, a painter and writer who had studied with Rembrandt. In 1661 or 1662 de Gelder went to Amsterdam to study with Rembrandt himself and his style remained rooted in the master’s late manner. In this finished drawing, Rembrandt’s influence is evident in the portrayal of the figures, the spirited penwork and the fluent use of the brush. Van Hoogstraten’s tuition had included an emphasis on drawing, including regular practice in drawing biblical compositions. The subject of this drawing derives from the Book of Samuel and probably depicts David taking leave of Jonathan.
