About this work
This portrait is believed to represent Highmore’s son, Anthony Highmore (1718–99). Anthony studied painting with his father but chose not to become a full-time artist. At twenty-one he inherited
an estate at Effingham, Surrey and embarked on the life of a gentleman farmer, later marrying Anna Ellis in 1740, with whom he had fifteen children. It is in this role as a country gentleman that Highmore’s eminent London-dwelling father has shown him. Highmore junior maintained an interest in landscape, sometimes tutoring and occasionally selling works until 1761, when he gave
up art altogether and turned to his father-in-law’s vocation, theology.
