About this work

The dark tonalities and small scale of this work suggest that the painting was made after Jacob Maris's return to The Hague in the 1870s, after years of study in Paris. This painting represents the tonalities admired in Maris's work by Vincent van Gogh before his departure for Paris early in 1886.
