About this work
The pastellist, painter and engraver Jean-Baptiste Perronneau was one of the most important portrait artists working in eighteenth-century France. He also travelled widely in search of patrons, working in Holland, Italy and Russia. In 1771–72 he was in Holland, where he painted this portrait of Petrus Woortman (1729–91), a Catholic priest at the Moses and Aaron Church in Amsterdam. He is shown wearing a stole embroidered with emblematic foliage and a fine openwork lace collar, and holding a Bible in his left hand. This painting was originally installed in the church; however, Woortman subsequently sold the original and replaced it with a copy.
