About this work
This portrait is traditionally said to represent the Countess of Cavan, born Elizabeth Wale of Dublin. Miss Wale married the 5th Earl of Cavan in 1741. The companion portrait to this work, dated 1751, was exhibited in 1903 in the Old Master Exhibition at the Royal Academy, London, as The 5th Earl of Cavan (no, 27).
