The frame on Cliff road came into the collection with the painting in 1949.
It consists of a simple, broad flat profile with sight-edge bevel. Thick layers of off-white gesso, toned pink, have been applied over a distressed water-gilded surface. The intentional rubbing away of the surface to reveal underlying colours and finishes was a technique employed by Sutherland in his framing. The slip is covered with a coarse hessian fabric, a variation on the canvas flats and linen slips introduced in the 1930’s. It is possible the basic form of the frame is re-cycled and once formed a large scale gilded slip.
