About this work
Jacopo Tintoretto was nearing fifty when he painted this formal portrait of the Venetian Doge Pietro Loredano. Tintoretto was a leading painter in Venice at a time when the Republic supported many outstanding artists, including Titian, Veronese, Paris Bordone, the Bassano family and Palma il Giovane. So prominent was Tintoretto that he was appointed Venetian court painter in 1559. Pietro Loredano was eighty-five when he was elected Doge in 1567, at a time when the power and influence of the Venetian state appeared to be waning. The pressure of office took its toll on Loredano, who served as Doge for only three years before his death in 1570.
