About this work
This is one of a series of views of urban Paris painted by Félix Vallotton that he referred to as paysages décoratifs (decorative landscapes). From 1901 onwards his landscapes were increasingly constructed, or ‘arranged’, from memory, rather than being strictly ‘copied’ from nature. Like other progressive artists before him, Vallotton was drawn to the industrialised outskirts of Paris, in this case to the Quai du Point du Jour, near the Auteuil viaduct.
