About this work
The Swedish artist Anders Zorn was internationally acclaimed for his life-like portraits during the last decades of the nineteenth century. This painting of Charles William Armitage exemplifies the lively brushwork and informal poses for which Zorn was so admired. Armitage was an English businessman and prominent breeder of Jersey cattle, and also a personal friend of the artist. Zorn painted the portrait during his stay at Armitage’s house, ‘The Woodlands’, in Northaw, Hertfordshire towards the end of 1889. In this year Zorn was made Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur at the Paris World Fair.
