About this work
Founded in 1893, Hicks, Atkinson & Sons was a continuation of Moubray, Rowan & Hicks linen drapers, silk mercers, outfitters and carpet warehousemen. Located at 348–50 Collins Street and 369–75 Little Collins Street, the store sold selected luxury goods within an elegant European-style atmosphere. The business also boasted a London address. In 1950 a shoe retailer purchased the company, changing the store’s image and stock, with the label finally closing in 1963. This evening dress is typical of the 1920s, with the cut and decorative beadwork echoing the Art Deco style.
