French designer André Courrèges worked as an assistant to Cristóbal Balenciaga before opening his own couture house in 1961. Against a background of technological change, new materials and the excitement of the space age, his futuristic aesthetic exploited dyes and cheaper and easier-to-maintain synthetic materials to introduce a bold and monochromatic palette to fashion.
