Frame
Original, maker unknown
Evidence in the paint layer and the reverse of the slip suggested the slip originally had radiused corners at the top. These were replaced in 2010 bringing a significant change in the perception of space in the painting.
Framemaker
Isaac Whitehead
Melbourne
Date
(1862)
Materials
The frame uses composition ornament on a wooden chassis. It has been gilded with gold leaf, lightly burnished on the inner bead and the corner leaves and flowers, remaining matte elsewhere.
Frame Condition
There is a slight variation in colour in the gold leaf, which may indicate overgilding of the leading edge. Apart from over painting of the lower cove, the frame is in near original condition.
