About this work
Richard Brooks captained the convict ship Atlas, which arrived in New South Wales in 1802. He was granted land in the colony and established a profitable business as a merchant and shipping agent. Augustus Earle arrived at Hobart Town in 1825, having been rescued from the remote island Tristan de Cunha, where he had been stranded for eight months following a sketching expedition. Born into an artistic family and trained at the Royal Academy in London, Earle had travelled and painted across Europe and the Americas, and quickly established himself in Sydney as one of the colony’s leading portraitists.
