This is a style of frame that appears in the Thallon ledger many times. It was a particular favourite of Frederick McCubbin. Only a fragment of the label remains to identify the maker.

1 Hilary Maddocks, ‘Picture Framemakers in Melbourne c. 1860–1930’ in vol. 1, Frames, Melbourne Journal of Technical Studies in Art, University of Melbourne Conservation Service, 1999.
The frame is made up from a composition torus of laurel and berry on a wooden chassis. The slip is water gilded gold leaf. The ornament is oil gilded with a matte finish. The working edge is painted pale ochre.
Apart from repairs to some of the ornaments, the frame is in good original condition. The surface has not been altered.
