The tabi boot has become synonymous with the house of Margiela. Inspired by traditional Japanese tabi socks, which have a split at the big toe so they can be worn with thonged footwear, Martin Margiela debuted the boot in his first fashion show in 1989 and they have been an intrinsic part of the house’s oeuvre since. Over the last twenty years, the house has produced countless iterations of the design in different shapes, colours and materials. The original Margiela tabi boot combines the split toe of the tabi sock with the cylindrical heel that was popular in footwear of the 1970s.
