The frame is gilded direct to oak, allowing the grain to show and is reflective of a surface finish favoured by the Pre-Raphaelite painters in the middle of the C19th.
The form and finish of the frame are reflective of the Chapman Bros. frame on Charles Shannon’s Souvenir of Van Dyck (263-2), which entered the collection in 1906.
