About this work
From the late 1920s Central Australia attracted increasing attention for its landscapes, prompting many artists to make painting trips to the area. In June 1938 Melbourne artist William Rowell joined an expedition to the Hermannsburg region that included Albert Namatjira, Rex Battarbee, John Gardner, and the writers Charles Jarrett and R. H. Croll. Travelling for several weeks through the surrounding country, the group relied on camels to carry their supplies. Central Australian landscape depicts three of the camels and was included in Rowell’s exhibition in Melbourne in October 1938.
