About this work
Jenny Bannister’s role in advocating for the development of an independent Australian fashion identity began in the 1970s , when she began experimenting with found objects and reworking existing garments. Bannister’s early work is characterised by unconventional materials and construction. Cartoon fish net dress, for example, is fastened by plastic laced eyelets with appliqued superman-comic cut-outs. Throughout the 1980s, Bannister continued to hone her craft, mastering leatherwork before specialising in evening wear.
