About this work

The artist represents Namarnkol, the silver barramundi, with minimal features of backbone and stomach. According to Kunwinjku narratives, Namarnkol created the East Alligator River when he forced his way through the sandstone hills and across the plains to the ocean. Namarnkol, the silver barramundi, is associated with the artist’s Born clan lands. The rarrk infill shown on this fish indicates its ancestral meanings and its role in the Mardayin ceremony.
