About this work

The form and decoration of this vase and the Doulton vase take inspiration from Japanese bronzes. The applied elephant-headed handles were a common feature of Asian bronzes and the decorative treatment of this vase attempts to imitate the bronze medium as well as ivory elements within the body. The Doulton vase also incorporates a gilt-metal mount, as would have been part of a Chinese or Japanese bronze vase.
