About this work

In 1966, London’s Carnaby Street became the world’s centre of men’s fashion. Coined ‘Peacock Alley’, the street was lined with boutiques full of flashy, fanciful clothes which challenged the traditional parameters of menswear. These flamboyant sartorial styles soon influenced Australian fashions. This three-piece suit featuring romantic, neo-Edwardian elements – wide velvet lapels, a longline jacket and check fabric – was purchased to wear to a local nightclub.
