About this work

Gianni Versace established his fashion label in 1978, and after eleven years of commercial and critical success as a ready-to-wear designer expanded into couture in 1989. His arresting and provocative designs were a synthesis of Hollywood glamour and contemporary materiality, exploring prints, leather and his own shimmering metal mesh ‘fabrics’. A master of overstatement, Versace created designs that were frequently worn by high-profile figures such as Madonna and Princess Diana, generating enormous media exposure.

Physical description
Full-length dress in gold metal mesh, with faux leopard print lurex bodice and gold metallic leather straps. The high-waisted metal mesh skirt panel has a subtle graduation of colour from gold to dull silver and features a draped panel on the right side. The dress fastens on the left side with a series of hook and eye fasteners.
