About this work
In this painting, Poole depicts the parting of a British family prior to emigration, possibly to Australia. When the work was exhibited at London’s Royal Academy in 1838, it was the first time a painting on the subject of emigration had been be shown there. Emigration, however, was topical and found instant recognition, and Poole’s painting was immediately purchased by a collector from Liverpool.
